Galaxy Group featuring Lady Alma
'Don't Play' (The Remixes)
Loveslap! Records
When you pair one of San Francisco's leading soulful house beat merchants with an equally talented label mogul, the result is always likely to be something special. Add to the mix Lady Alma's seductive vocal prowess, some quite stunning live musicianship, and a stellar remix package featuring both DJ Spinna and Ruffy & Tuffy, and the resultant is total fulfillment.
The Galaxy Group is the latest in a long line of quality releases from the Bay Area's exemplary Loveslap! Recordings label. Comprising Antoine Green (aka Capitol A) and Charles Spencer, the duo have now been working together for several years since they collaborated on a remix of 'Serve It Up' – a Sonar Kollektiv single for Green's Capital A nom de plume. The result was met with such critical acclaim that the two created the Galaxy Group alias.
Fast-forward to 2009 and 'Don't Play', the lead single from the upcoming opus, 'This Is Who We Are'. Philly-based soul singer Lady Alma offers her vocal dexterity to the soul-drenched debut, a silky tour de force of jazzy house rhythms, subtle sun-kissed swinging percussive fills and a rich Mediterranean melody that has all the warmth of the midday sun, yet the coolness of the ocean's breeze. Spinna's trio of mixes are subtle in the extreme and the epitome of cool for a record that is expected to wow the Miami elite in March at the WMC pool parties and beach gatherings alike. While San Fran's space-disco kids Ruffy & Tuffy, also known as 40 Thieves, deliver an equally stunning slice of chunkier future disco nuances that paint an altogether more bumping soundscape.
The first of a dozen polished and timeless tracks housed within 'This Is Who We Are', - the album features a support cast including Chicago songstress Carla Prather, percussionist Rafael Moraes and Mark de Clive Lowe on keyboards. Drawing influences as wide and varied as deep-house, broken-beat and hip-hop, the collection marks an exciting new direction for both producers and label alike with its uncomplicated and assuredly smooth blend of quality-assured songs, it's sure to edify the taste buds.
